Our Roman archaeobotanists in fieldwork and conferences

Our MSCA post-doctoral fellow, Dr Jessie Feito, went for another year to Pompeii with the Casa della Regina Carolina Excavations (University of Bologna, Cornell University, Harvard University). Jessie does the archaeobotany for the project, using archaeobotanical macroremains (e.g., seeds, fruits) to explore plant use within the house and plant-human interactions in one of the largest domestic gardens at Pompeii. The team excavated new exciting contexts with excellent potential for archaeobotanical preservation! Below you see Dr Feito (right) together with colleagues Emily Lime (UNC Chapel Hill), Roberta Ferritto (University of Bologna), and Cole Warlick (UNC Chapel Hill) examining flotation finds.

Prior to Pompeii Jessie and former ICAC Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow Dr Patricia Vandorpe (PlantNetGem’ [MSCA-2021-PF-01-101063192]) also went to Aarhus, Denmark for the Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference/Roman Archaeology Conference (RAC/TRAC). Together they chaired the session entitled Food Trade and Transportation Networks in the Roman Empire, which they co-organised also with Dr Andrew Mclean (BSC) and Dr Alexandra Livarda (ICAC). The session was very successful bringing together a range of papers providing fresh ideas on the topic and a lot of food for thought!
