The Roman villa of Els Munts (Tarraco): presentation of the new volume published by the MNAT

We are glad to invite you to the presentation of the new volume on the Roman villa of Els Munts, published by the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona. The presentation of this publication will be carried out by Dr. Josep Maria Palet, director of the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology, and will take place at the Territorial Services of Culture (Carrer Major, 14) in Tarragona, on Thursday 9th February at 19h CET.

Els Munts (Tarraco) is one of the best-preserved aristocratic villas in Roman Hispania. Located in an incomparable setting, close to the beach, it was intended for the leisure of the elites of Tarraco and played a key role in their social, political and economic relations, as evidenced in events like the stay in Tarraco of the emperor Hadrian during the winter of 122 to 123 AD, an event of enormous impact that required a residence worthy of the personage.

With documentation largely unpublished or published in a preliminary and scattered form, the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (MNAT) publishes a monograph that makes available to the scientific community and the general public the results of almost seventy years of archaeological interventions and studies on the Roman villa of Els Munts.

The monograph Vil·la romana dels Munts (Tarraco), edited by Joan Anton Remolà (MNAT), includes a chapter by GIAP (ICAC) researcher Lídia Colominas:

Katie Tardio (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Lídia Colominas present the preliminary results of the archaeozoological study of the faunal remains recovered in Els Munts, a Roman villa located 14 kilometers from Tarraco. So far, more than 800 faunal remains that can be dated between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD, are presented in this chapter.

These first archaeozoological data from Els Munts provide valuable information about this well-known coastal site; as they provide information on the economy of the villa, focusing on aspects such as the animal management and exploitation that was carried out, and also on the food preferences of its inhabitants.
