This July the BSA’s ‘Supplementary Volumes’ series published a new volume by Carl Knappett, Alexandra Livarda and Nicoletta Momigliano that brought together the results of their PALAP Palaikastro landscape and excavation project in the east of Crete.
The book presents the results of excavations at the settlement, landscape survey and palaeoenvironmental analysis, revealing long-term agropastoral subsistence strategies in the area, from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age and reconstructs the economic strategies underpinning the flourishing but also end of the city. It reports on the finds of a new neighbourhood uncovered, with three buildings of Middle and Late Bronze Age date, shedding new light into this important town’s lifeways. With a methodology integrating several fields of analysis, from bioarchaeology and material culture to soil micromorphology and architecture, this publication opens a new chapter in the long history of archaeological research at Palaikastro, and Minoan Crete more broadly. Much supporting data in the form of tables and charts, as well as Appendices on the Palaikastro Education Project and a reappraisal of the Petsophas peak sanctuary, are available in PDF format.
