Theoni Baniou, GIAP-ICAC PhD candidate (supervised by Dr Alexandra Livarda and Dr Núria Romani), finished in June her academic stay in Porto (Portugal). Theoni spent the last 1.5 months working with Dr João Tereso and his team at the BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, University of Porto, and the MHNC – UP, the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto. During this period, she consulted the archaeobotanical reference collection working towards identifications on Roman assemblages and she participated in the lab activities led by Dr Tereso. This was a very fruitful time during which Dr Tereso and his team generously and expertly guided Theoni through the archaeobotany of the Iberian Peninsula, and particularly of its western extent. There were daily discussions on seed identifications, and on issues of archaeobotanical theory and analysis. Theoni enjoyed very much her stay in Porto, which was really beneficial in helping her to develop her archaeobotanical knowledge and gain new skills. We cannot thank enough our great hosts at Porto!

Theoni Baniou is a PhD candidate working on the project “Exploring Roman tastes: an interdisciplinary approach,” which uses archaeobotany, organic residue analysis, and GMM to reconstruct dietary habits in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. She got a grant from the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology, ICAC-CERCA (CIN21 26.59). The stay was also partly funded by the SGR (AGAUR 2021 SGR 00992, part of the funds allocated to GIAP-Livarda) of the Agencia de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
