Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher Faidon Moudopoulos has published two new book chapters surrounding the heritage of Zagori (Greece) in the book:

The book is dedicated to Stavros Moudopoulos, and pays special attention to his efforts to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Zagori. His commitment to safeguarding the region’s traditions and fostering a sense of pride in the local heritage is a central theme throughout the book.
The first article, “two unpublished ottoman documents from the decade of 1820 and their importance for Zagori” written with Elias Kolovos, Assoc. Prof of Ottoman History in the University of Crete, discusses two legal documents revealing aspects of the montane economy of Zagori in NW Greece and the extent to which the wealth of these mountainous communities brought havoc to the region due to raids by small military groups. Furthermore, we place this discussion in the context of the Greek revolution of 1821 and its effect in the lands of Epirus.
The second, “the remaining graffiti of ottoman scribes in Zagori” publishes the remaining visible graffiti of the 19th century Ottoman census-makers in Zagory. As they tended to keep written notes on the exterior walls of buildings, we were able to trace their movement within the villages and offer insights to the ongoing discussion on how these officers performed their duties and whether they had assistance from locals. We conclude that further research, with the aid of infrared technology, could reveal more graffiti and help re-trace this heritage that otherwise is almost lost.
Dr. Faidon Moudopoulos-Athanasiou is a postdoctoral fellow with the project Heritage under young forests: recording and interpreting the cultureal heritage underneath the afforested Zagori (NW Greece).
