The archaeology of the Bronze Age in South Asia

Today afternoon (3:00 PM in the Canary Islands), Dr. Francesc C. Conesa will give an invited lecture on the Indus Civilization and our work in India and Pakistan at the University of La Laguna.

Francesc will summarise the main highlights and recent discoveries of the archaeology of the Indus Civilisation to first-year undergraduates of the History course at the University of La Laguna. He will do so by focusing on the urbanism traits and shared material culture of the Indus domain, while also critically looking at what cinema have shown us -or not- about the ancient civilisation through the visualisation of some scenes from the film Mohenjo Daro (2016).

He will also introduce to students the remote-based work recently developed by the computational team at GIAP (ICAC-CERCA), as well as the results of the excavations at the Early Harappan cemetery site of Juna Khatiya (2019-2022) and the settlement of Padta Bet (March 2024). GIAP (ICAC-CERCA) has participated in those excavations in collaboration with the University of Kerala, the University of Kutch, the National Spanish Research Council and the University of La Laguna.

Francesc C. Conesa is a Beatriu de Pinós Postdoctoral fellow with the project: “Automated detection and monitoring of endangered archaeological sites at global scales using Big Earth Data, cloud-computing workflows and Artificial Intelligence. (2020 BP 00203)”
