Giannis’ short bio
Giannis is a young Greek researcher who came to ICAC to start his doctoral thesis in June 2020, in the midst of the pandemic! We are very glad that, despite the adversities, he was able to go ahead with his project, in which he investigates new mechanisms for conducting archaeological surveys remotely and automatically: with drones and big data.
His area of study is closely linked to his homeland: Greece. Specifically, in the mountain area of Grevena and the plain of Thessaly. The different geographical characteristics of these areas open up different possibilities for applying different automatic survey techniques and comparing the results obtained in each case. Because of this, he spends most of his time between Greece and Tarragona, especially when he has to do fieldwork or lead an archaeological campaign.
Giannis has been working on an international scale for some time: after graduating in Archeology and Ancient History at the University of Thessaloniki (Greece) he did a master’s degree at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom) and he resides in Tarragona since 2020.
His thesis project is entitled ‘Advancing the development of automated intensive archaeological survey: application to case studies from Greece’ and is led by ICAC researcher Hèctor A. Orengo (ICREA Research Professor at ICAC) which has recently obtained the distinction of ICREA Research Professor, a talent recruitment and retention program, fully public, financed by the Generalitat de Catalunya, and which has come to be synonymous with academic excellence on a global scale.
